What Time Zone Am I In?

Your browser exposes the time zone your device is set to through a standard, privacy-safe API (Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone). It returns a zone name such as America/New_York—not your GPS position, street address, or IP address. The check runs entirely on your device; nothing is uploaded, and we do not ask for location permission.

UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. It is the world’s reference clock: every time zone is defined as a fixed number of hours (and sometimes minutes) ahead of or behind UTC. UTC itself never changes for daylight saving. Airlines, servers, satellites, and international schedules use it so that everyone is comparing against the same clock.

The difference is your UTC offset, shown above as something like UTC-4 or UTC+5:30. A minus sign means your clock is behind UTC; a plus sign means it is ahead. Example: if you are on UTC-4 and it is 12:00 UTC, your local time is 8:00 AM. If you are on UTC+8, the same moment is 8:00 PM for you. The offset can change twice a year in zones that observe daylight saving time.

Take the offset from the UTC panel above. It can be written several ways that all mean the same thing: UTC-4, UTC-04:00, GMT-4, or the ISO 8601 form -04:00. Software settings often ask for the IANA name instead (for example America/New_York), which is also listed in the “other formats” table so you can copy whichever one a form requires.

The detection reads your device’s time zone setting, so it is wrong only when that setting is wrong: you travelled and your phone or laptop did not update automatically, you are using a remote desktop or work computer configured for another office, or the operating system has “set time zone automatically” turned off. Your location stays in the same zone, but the offset and abbreviation change. U.S. Eastern Time, for example, is EST (UTC-5) in winter and EDT (UTC-4) in summer. The DST indicator above tells you which one applies right now and when the next switch happens. Many places—most of Asia and Africa, Arizona, Hawaii, and Queensland—never change clocks, so their offset is the same all year.

For everyday use, yes: GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and UTC share the same offset of zero. Technically UTC is the modern atomic-clock standard, while GMT is a time zone used in the UK in winter. When you see “GMT-4” in a settings menu, treat it as identical to “UTC-4”.

The full name describes the zone and the season, such as Eastern Daylight Time; the abbreviation is the short code, EDT. Abbreviations are handy but ambiguous—“CST” is used for Central Standard Time in North America, China Standard Time, and Cuba Standard Time. When precision matters, prefer the UTC offset or the IANA name.
